What is it?
If you're looking for an EV charger for your home, you'll find an ever growing choice on the market. In fact, you can even buy them from Screwfix these days. Most people however, will choose a charger with installation, but there's still a wide array of different EV chargers to choose from.
One name you're very likely to see is Ohme. The brand was founded in 2017 but has quickly made a name for itself, partnering with the likes of Octopus Energy, Volkswagen and Hyundai, among many others.
It offers two EV chargers - the Ohme Home Pro, which we're testing here, or the Ohme ePod. The Home Pro is a little more expensive, costing from £999 including standard installation, but it comes with a colour screen and a tethered 5 metre type 2 cable. You can upgrade to an 8 metre cable if needed.
It features smart EV charging technology which uses live data to give you cheaper charging. It's also solar charging compatible and has over-the-air updates. It comes with a three-year warranty as standard.
What is it like?
Getting our Ohme Home Pro installed was a very simple process. We did have to fill out a lengthy online form which also involved drawing a plan of where we wanted the charger and even doing a video from the power supply to the location, but from that point on it was only days before an installer from Bibby Energy arrived to fit the unit. He was excellent, talking us through the process and giving us different options for where exactly to locate it. He even had a phone full of previous installations so we could see how it would look.
A few hours later and he was done. We had our Ohme Home Pro fitted to the front of our house with the power supply cable neatly running along the ground and around our front door step. We chose to have the cable storage alongside as we have often have two EVs to charge - one of which changes pretty much every week so we're never sure where the charging point will be.
While the Ohme Home Pro does come with a neat display screen, we rarely look at it, instead using the excellent Ohme app to manage our charging. This not only links to your car, but you can also add your energy tariff, giving you an estimated cost. Once you've added your car and set your charge amount, it will then show the charge schedule.
And this is the clever bit. Ohme uses dynamic charging technology, so will charge when prices are cheapest. It does this by using live data from the power network to determine when energy usage is low. That's when it will charge your car.
And to make this even more smart, once you've integarted with your energy tariff - in our case Intelligent Octopus Go - the unit works out the cheapest times to charge. It means no having to mess about with schedules yourself. You simply plug it in and leave it to it. Usually this means the bulk of your charge will be overnight - but we often find it charging during the middle of the day.
One gripe we did have with the Ohme app was the fact that you could only have one EV at a time. With two EVs in our house we were continually having to delete and add cars, re-pairing to the API each time. Fortunately, in March 2025, Ohme updated the app and you can now have numerous cars on the app, making it easy to switch between them. It's only a small change but makes a huge difference.
Should I buy one?
We've now had our Ohme Home Pro for close to 6 months and it has been superbly reliable. We've used it with our own Audi e-tron as well as a slew of different EVs we have tested including everything from a Volvo EC40 and a Vauxhall Astra Electric to a Volkswagen ID.7 GTX and a BMW i5 M60. It's perfomed impeccably with all, which the app making things very simple to control.
I initially wasn't sure if a five metre cable would be long enough given the various EVs I test, but it's surprisingly flexible cable and I've managed to hook it up to every EV that's been on the drive with no fuss. You can lock the unit - as we have - so you have to approve each plug-in via the app. It means no one can randomly just charge their car while you're out.
For us, the fact the Home Pro comes with the backing of Ohme is another plus. While the charger itself is one part of the package, it's the connectivity and app that means it works as so effectively. While we looked at cheaper chargers, there's no guarantee their manufacturers will be around in years to come. And if something goes wrong with the charger or app, aftersales is crucial. It's why we'd always recommend a trusted provider like Ohme.
True it's not the most exciting of designs, compared to rivals like the Hypervolt Home 3 Pro the Ohme looks plain. But that shouldn't detract from the fact that this is an excellent performer and a charger we'd recommend to both EV and PHEV owners looking for something reliable and easy to use.
