Top 10: Lego sets for adults 2023
Let’s not kid ourselves. Lego is far too clever and satisfying to be fully appreciated by children; only an adult brain is worthy of the best of the Danish geniuses. Whether you agree or not, here’s 10 Lego kits that are too good (or expensive) for the small people.
Architecture London Set
Build your own idyllic pre-Brexit vision of London with this Architecture set. All the important landmarks are here, such as the National Gallery, Nelson's Column, London Eye, Big Ben and Tower Bridge. Creator Expert Volkswagen T1 Camper Van
However challenging the build of this Creator T1 Camper set is, be assured it can never be as headache-inducing as the real thing - even if it does come with a solid 16+ age rating. The classic lines of the T1 really suit a rendering in Lego and there are plenty of satisfying details - not least the ‘Make Lego Models - Not War’ T-shirt included in the cabin.

Creator Expert Taj Mahal
Unquestionably one of the more technically challenging Architecture Lego models, the Taj Mahal is made up of an eyebrow-raising 5923 pieces. Updated in 2008 and recently re-issued to celebrate the ten-year anniversary, there are four facades with elevations and round windows, one main dome, four domed secondary chambers and four minarets, all carefully adorned with accurate decoration. Thankfully it can be split into seven parts for transportation although that’s probably not something you’ll want to do too often.

Technic Bugatti Chiron
Most definitely one for the grown ups, the Bugatti Chiron is the most technically advanced Lego vehicle to date. Containing 3599 pieces the kit replicates the Chiron’s highly-complex eight-speed paddleshift gearbox, the top speed key that lowers the spoiler and even a Bugatti overnight bag in the boot. Children may be allowed to view it from behind the red rope however.

Harry Potter Hogwart’s Castle
Available from 1 September 2018, those fans who crossover between Lego and Harry Potter will be delighted to get their hands on this brand-new addition to the catalogue. Checking in at a mighty 6020 pieces, you get four minifigures and 27 microfigures. The castle details include the Great Hall with buildable ‘stained-glass’ windows, Defence Against the Dark Arts classroom, Professor Dumbledore’s office with the Griffin statue entrance and Memory cabinet, and the Whomping Willow - which includes the buildable blue Flying Ford Anglia car in its spinning branches. It would make an excellent Christmas present to yourself. Click here to buy directly from Lego.
Disney Castle
Another building that is groaning with attention to detail, the Disney Castle is a build designed for those 16 years and over, although you might have an issue stopping your children getting hold of it. Comprised of 4080 pieces there are certainly some hours to put in, with five floors all the way up to the tower and authentic details like a glass slipper and fairytale book hidden under the removable roof. You also get five minifigures; Mickey and Minnie, Donald and Daisy plus Tinkerbell, so you’ll need to provide your own Prince Charming.

Star Wars Death Star
A long-term favourite of the serious Lego fan, the Death Star has been updated over the original version to include an increased number of minifigures (now 23 plus 2 droids) and other refinements designed to improve the overall finish. With 4016 pieces and a slightly awkward shape it will be a labour of love, but the end result is beautifully detailed. Highlights include a superlaser control room, conference chamber, hangar bay with moving launch rack and detachable TIE Advanced with space for Lord Vader.

Star Wars Millennium Falcon 2017 Edition UCS
Unquestionably the daddy of the Lego world, the 2017 version of this set goes all-out in terms of numbers. If you can get past the price it’s worth noting that the Millenium Falcon is made up of over 7500 pieces, almost twice as much as any other build here. Given the subject matter it’s no surprise that the details matter; you can switch some features to suit classic or Episode VII/VIII versions, Leia and Han’s minifigure heads can be rotated to show breathing masks and the interior includes the Dejarik holographic game and console details.
